They really needed Porto to lose but they didn't
They will probably qualify as over the last 2-3 in Europe they have been very, very lucky with performances/results

What is it about the British that they always seem to come back from a bad situation and THEN manage to snatch defeat from the Jaws of victory
Footie: Last Year, 3 out of 4 teams in Euro Cup Semi's are British - none win it
F1 -British Teams drivers in top two positions for Drivers Championship coming into last race - neither win it
Rugby - Come from nowhere in Rugby World Cup to get to final - Lose.

Lets just clear this up...."3 out of 4 teams in the Euro Cup Semi's were
English - none win it".
Man Utd lost to the winners. Chelsea lost to the other finalists, Liverpool, who were again lucky that they can score more penalties than Chelsea.
Its difficult for some English clubs to compete in Europe. Liverpools 'success' over the last few years is down to the fact that they've not bothered with the Premier League whereas Chelsea and Man Utd were going for the title. Both clubs were also in the FA Cup (eventual finalists) and as such were playing a minimum of 2 games a week (sometimes 3!) whereas AC Milan only play once a week and were well out of their league title. In the league games prior to meeting Man Utd AC Milan fielded a reserve team thus resting their players prior to the big matches - not really a level playing field.
