You should install the tray first, then seal around the edge with silicon, then tile and then seal again with silicon.

I always use this stuff myself when doing shower tray / bath tiling.

Silcone under it for a watertite seal and allows the tiles to have a nice square bottom.

To answer the question "it depends on the enclosure" Continental way is to tile first, whereas the English way is to tile second.

Some enclosures won't fit if you do it wrong so read the instructions before you start.

Check also the tile thickness this can make a lot of difference as well.

I definitely tray in first with silicone seal. Then tile down and silicone seal again. English way maybe but it works. :-)

I agree tiling second is the favourite way by try doing it with one of these.

Some trays/enclosures under line the point.

thank you all for your advice.

Nothing in the shower enclosure documentation mentions the tray in regard to tiling only fiting it before the enclosure which i thought was a no brainer....
guess i'll have to put the enclosure partially together and see how it sits on the tray.
tiles are 8mm thick.

The Tray and enclosure are Showerama, if you tile the English way, E.G. after the tray is fitted the enclosure will not fit.

It is quite common with most European products, especially when you are using thick tiles, to tile first or pack the tray off the wall.

This is my new shower tray. its a low profile lightweight one.

I'm not able to run the waste under the floor as the joists all run the wrong way so i have to raise the tray to accommodate the waste so it doesnt sit directly onto the tiled floor looking slim and sleek....this defeats the objective you may say but it's nice and new and came with the shower enclosure.

The original monstorous beast which i've removed weighed a ton and sat on 4 x 8 timber siliconed to the floor. so my question: Can i fix the new tray using the same method as the old i.e. on timber blocks (4 x 4 this time which gives enough clearance for the waste) and silicone the timber to the underside of the tray and the tiled floor.

any suggestions would be gratefully recieved.

Most shower trays need support over the full area, a 4X2 frame topped with 18-20mm WBP ply is the usual way to achieve that.

And then how is this frame fixed to tray snd floor? Silicone?

I would use screws (before the ply goes on top) or Gripfill or silicone if you prefer. Level the frame up before it's fixed and the shower tray should be pretty much level when it goes on the ply.
