Am currently in the prep stage in my own bathroom.

Have a plasterer booked for a weeks time to re-skim two walls. One wall is currently painted but did have a rad hung on it. The other wall is 1/2 tile 1/2 paint. The other two walls are floor to ceiling (or bath to ceiling) tiles. This will mostly end up being re-tiled the same except for a 400x2400mm area between the edge of the bath and door frame. The freshly skimmed walls will be painted.

Now, my main concern at the minute is that in removing the tiles the previous skim has all come away with the old adhesive. Under this skim the base layer (hardwall?) is very crumbly/dusty. Certainly not good enough for tiling. Areas of it have blown completely which i've knocked off so down to bare block.

Considering the wall shall be tiled (except from the area between the bath and door frame) what would be the best course of action? My initial thoughts are to go back to bare block and then apply a render to the block. Not something I've done before or know anything about. I've read this is a great base for tiling? How about a plasterer putting a skim on it (for the small area I need painted)?

After lots of reading on the forums. I firstly removed all loose material. Then dot and dabbed plasterboard to the walls which are to be painted. I then had the boards skimmed.

I rendered the walls to be tiled with Bal Quickset render. Gave them two coats of Bal Apd undiluted before rendering.

That's as far as I've got at present. I have a very deep channel to sort out directly above one end of the bath. I'd say it's about 50mm deep (not created by me!). Any ideas on the best way to fill it? Can Quickset be applied in 20mm layers?

The QSR should be ok.....or you could use ardex a45....this is what I use 100% off the time...
