DVD TO MONITOR

I'm trying to use a monitor to watch DVD's.
I've connected the two via a VGA to SCART cable.
The monitor turns on but then displays a message saying
'out of range' for 60 seconds and then turns itself off.
This happens irrespective of wether the DVD is turned on or off.
The monitor itself was up to recently connected to a computer
and worked fine.
I was working on the assumption that as it displayed DVD's played through the
computer,i could connect it directly to a DVD player.
Both machines are 50-60 hz.
Am i missing a trick or trying to achieve the impossible ?
Cheers

Check that you are outputting at 640x480 resolution first. If you are set to 800x600 or 1024x768 it might be 'out of range' for the monitor. Some monitors can't accept anything other than a single video 'mode' - the manual should tell you which.

where did you get such a cable?

VGA-SCART? Sounds odd......RGB from SCART is not USUALLY supported on a monitor as it doesn't do V or H sync or some such.

You used to be able to buy converters that took care of this.

I remember there used to be all sorts of modular cables that could make product X fit product Z - never worked. Just 'cos it fits, don't mean it'll work
