I am upgrading our kitchen but as the worktops are fine, we intend to keep them. Is it possible to remove base units one by one and replace with new carcasses without disturbing the worktops? Any advice much appreciated.

yes and no

there may be services through the base units
there may be fixings behind the base units

sinks will have to come out

you need to be sure the base units are the same size not taller wider or deeper

i don't think it will be possible. the worktops should be secured to the base units and these are more than likely holding the worktop in place. although you should be able to remove the worktops replace the units and re-use the worktops on the new units

On ours, the base units are attached the wall (plus services through the wood at the back) but the then work top goes on top. You cannot get to the base unit fixings without removing the top or drilling big holes through to un screw. I will try and show you on a photo if I find them

The oval shows where our unit (not neccesarily the same as yours) touches the wall and this is what I have secured to the wall. I cannot access those screws without drilling a hole through the back or by removing the work top.

Then again, it does not mean I have done it right in the first place!

Do you really need to replace the cabinets? A door replacement often does the job for less cost and hassle.

If you need to take them out then logically the units of a run will be screwed together side to side and often the screw is hidden under the hinge plates. The next point is likely to be at the back of the unit holding them to the wall and then most likely there will be screws through the tops holding the worktop on. So I would say that it would be possible to systematically replace units one by one and then copy the original fixing process to firm them up again.

I have replaced an odd unit that is damaged or whatever and I would say it can be done you may have to cut a fair area out of the sink unit to get it in unless you are removing the sink and disconnecting the pipework

Can be done. A right pain in the proverbial, but achievable depending how the units are installed.

Have had instructions to do this on insurance work and always ignore the instructions as it is quicker and easier to take the worktops out also and then install back in.

Only ever do it as, inspire, above when one unit has to be replaced.

You can take out all the units if you prop the worktops up and bracket them at the back to the wall.
