Silicone on black tiles

Post by Tesla »

Hi all,

Just re tiled my bathroom with a black tile design and white grout.

I've sealed around the bath and the vertical corners with dow corning white. Now doubting if I should of used black, at least for the vertical corners.

Any experience of finishing with either? Which looks the best?

That was my line of thought but getting the white sealant to look perfect against the black tile isn't easy for a DIY'er!

Already on my second attempt. Found out the hard way how good a quality and flexible dow corning is though!

tip I was told many many moons ago, but never had to use myself (though probably should've a few times  ) is mask off the area you dont want to sealant to spread out to apply as normal, then any wavy or thick lines can be lifted off on top of the masking tape. as said I've never used this tip but I can see it working in theory

I also agree white sealant on black tiles to match the grout, darkest colour I've ever used is navy blue on Spanish tiles, again with white grout - effect was pretty good

As above masking tape....but try a bit off masking tape on a spare tile first, just to make sure it won't leave any mark/residue on the tile...

Other methods...a lollipop stick...fugi set...or....

For me...index finger.....

Just cut your nozzle very slightly on the 45degree run it in one motion from top to bottom...leave for about 3-5min then smooth off....

As for silicone... Dow Corning or CT1 for me...best out there....

Used blue painters tape and got a reasonable finish. Certainly practice makes perfect I feel.

Wouldn't mind watching a pro mastic-man at work to pick up a few tips!

Ha ha, my silicon work is 5hite hot and I still can't get anywhere near the speed as a pro applicator. Or have as little waste as they do.

As long as the finish is the same, then that is the important thing. I have got it down to about five minutes for a bath start to finish and it is perfect.

Masking tape to catch the excess, a wet smoothing tool, lots of kitchen paper to collect the excess silicone of your tool.
