Broken alloy hinge?

Post by martyn1967 »

Hi all, i have a broken hinge to fix from some patio doors, its a rebated hinge & has cracked off on the corner full length. called into a metal welding shop near me today & he said he wouldnt even bother as it would break again.
Is there any such glue that would weld it back together?
It will not be carrying any weight as such when its refixed, & mainly cosmetic.
Any ideas appreciated.

Good question big all, this 1 was the top hinge of 4 on the r/h door, i've swapped it with the second from bottom of the l/h door so when & if i manage to fix it, the door will be adjusted so that weight of door will have the least stress on the repaired hinge if that makes any sense. :-)

I'd vote for trying to find a new hinge, by the time its cleaned up, welded and painted white again it would cost more than a new hinges probably.

Plus welding hinges nearly always makes them get a tight spot.

Its a neighbour of mine all, & asked me if i could fix it for him all, he also said he could claim on his insurance as it is covered. But he has a £100 excess.
The doctor route is already well out of the question!
Me being a good neighbour would like to try & sort his little problem. without him claiming/worrying, & making premiums rocket! tried a few d/g facs already with no joy, thats when i thought of welding.
Bet the whole hinge doesn't come to more than a Tenner, if you can find 1.
