How to reactivate the registry?

Well my parents laptop got a virus, stubbon little b*stard.
After a bit of umming and ahhing and scratching my head I managed to remove the virus application using safe mode with command prompt.
Only trouble being it's disabled the registry and a multitude of other things (task manager, a few other things) from within the registry, I can't seem to get it back at all.

Anyone got any insight into this?

I had a user bring in a laptop with a virus like this, it disabledd all permisions. i gave it to a colleague to fix as i was busy and he spent hours trying to fix it, i took it off him and wiped and reloaded a ghost in 10 minutes......

fixing is good but a wipe is better and gets all the virus trojan malware

What he said. I quite like doing battle with some of these viruses but removing them is half the job. Some of them make such a mess of your system it's just best to wipe and start again. I jst find this creates a problem for people reinstalling all the programs they built up over the years. Especially when they expect you to install Office for free.

Damn, only problem being I deleted the recovery partition and it doesn't had a disc drive (netbook)

If you have access to the Windows installation CD/DVD, you can create an iso file of the CD/DVD on a computer with a disc drive with a tool like this one http://www.magiciso.com/tutorials/miso-makeiso.htm You can then use this tool to put the iso file onto a USB flash drive and make it bootable http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/mss ... vd_dwnTool.

I always install Windows 7 this way as it's much faster than using a DVD, but I haven't tried it with Windows XP.

I had a similar bug but there is software (unhackme)to get control again

Can you still log on ok? I have re-written registry files with the command prompt before. takes a while but it worked.

A clean install will fix all the problems right enough, but you will loose anything that didn't come with the machine originally surely?! Always a last option in my book.

listen to the pro's telling you what they do for a living.. wipe and rid of the cr4p, overwriting or trying to fix doesn't always fix it properly.

i usually wipe clean once a year. a pain in the neck but it's only a case of reinstalling a few bits and gives you a nice clean system by removing the the things you don't realise is in
