Hi, I'm running Vista, I recently upgrade my pc to duo core (intel). Previously, running E2140 (1.6GHz) and had a new fresh installation of Vista - it runs perfectly without any hitches. But within a couple of weeks later having seen the price drop in pc components, I decided to changed the memory and CPU (1.8Ghz now), now this problem arises. The problem only occurs occasionally (but still a problem) - it boots upto opening of desktop screen and then freezes, the mouse cursor still manoeverable, the rest just freezes. Any ideas pls?

I would suspect faulty RAM.
Had a similar problem when I added a 1GB module to wifes laptop - crashed or hung at random, took out RAM - ok, put it back in, hung again
And the RAM passed all the tests I could find as well. Sent it back, got a new module, fitted it, no problems since
Tricky to fix if random:
Put back the old processor
OR the old RAM and see what happens.
... If ok for a while, probably whatever you upgraded and is now on shelf,
... If hangs, swap them round again and see if it hangs.
Then send back whatever was out of the system when it worked without a hitch

Hi, yeah I think it's probably the ram as it was pretty cheap when I got it. But last night I decided to see what bios option are for ram on my mobo, it seem i can adjust speed and timing, so set that to auto speed - so far (touch wood) it's running without any hitch.
Refering to CPU heat temperature, it running fine at around 25-35oC

nice one
25-35C is a very healthy temp, if things haven't changed too much from when I used to deal with that kind of thing

Yeah I know the feeling, its those power machine that required lots 3D powers ie, gaming rigs that hype up those temp.
It seem my pc is stable again now, having test the bootup process several times today and with no hitches.
So thanks again for your replies.

FWIW, I used that on some memory I bought for a laptop - ran overinght without a problem - unlike Windows with the RAM
they are worth a go but don't
always pickup the problem.

No I left it as it is, just change the speed & timing.
