Aside from the obvious need for a workaround to clean install is the upgrade licence similar to Retail or OEM?

What I mean by that is if I have it on one pc, if I decide to upgrade in 6 months time can I uninstall my upgrade media from one pc and then "upgrade" the new model?

I think the fact you need a 'workaround' shows it's the wrong version

Techncially, an OEM version should be attached to a hardware purchase and "should not" be transfered to another PC. A retail copy would be the better choice, if you are so inclined to follow the letter of the law.

Win8 is just around the corner with some amazing deals to be had for new installations - you in a rush?

Well if you own a previous licence for that machine (which I do, honest  ) you are well within your rights to clean install upgrade. I know that much.

Either way I'll get a cheap upgrade to 8 when that comes out. The reason I'm using upgrade software is because I'm a student, it's dirt cheap, (£40 odd for win 7 pro).
I don't know why they only allow us to have retail cheaper but there you go.

I've got my main workstation but I want to keep my masses of media away from it.
I'm debating buying a cheap pc as a temporary media server until I can built one in a few months, so what I want to do is install the "upgrade" windows 7 onto that then migrate it to the new machine in a few months time.

I know with retail you can migrate the install but with upgrade I'm not sure about licensing etc?

when you say media server, do you actually mean SERVER or a desktop that you stick things on? If you mean server server, then consider one of these:

Dead link removed by Admin

Plus you get 100 quid cashback - fill them with drives (4 bays) and put Windows Home Server on it.

230ish and it'll outlive you.

Media server, however the build will serve as a HTPC as well as holding it for other devices.
Got a solid 12tb of media (by my calculations) I want to digitise.

I keep getting tempted to buy one of these.

Cheaper here if anyone is in the market for one.
