New screen

My son has kicked his football against my laptop screen and knackered it.
have looked on ebay for new screens and found these.

i should be able to change it myself.
also found a yankee one for 150 dollars and was wondering if that is a better deal.
any help appreciated.

if i was to get a new one can i transfer my files across.
the screen is totally knackered so cant see anything.
is there a way to hook it up to another computer and save all files?

depends on your policy, but if you could claim for, say, a dropped TV or a football whacked though the window, you could claim for a laptop.
Obviously, this laptop is never used for any business purpose, is it
on my Home Insurance, I have claimed barrister fees against an employer and damaged leathers after a bike crash!

#1 - if it is still working and you can get hold of a normal PC desktop screen, then you plug that in, boot up the pc and the display will appear on the external screen.
#2 - if you feel you can replace the laptop screen yourself, then you should be able to do this:
Open it up and get the hard drive out.
Then get something like
this
Plug your old drive into the connector, then plug the USB plug into another PC and a new drive will appear on that PC.
Job Done!

just taken the pc screen cable out of the pc and pluged it into the lappy but it didnt show on the screen.
any help?

did you actually power on the system with it plugged in already? much easier if you do that.
What is the actual model number of the laptop?

ok, i pressed all the f keys and i am now on my lappy through the pc screen.
how would i save files now to the pc?
do i need a special cable or would i be better buying an external hard drive and copying everything onto that. something i was going to get round to doing anyway.

External hard drives are cheap as chips these days.....well worth it!

I would 2nd that
No need to skimp on size either!
If you fancy a bit of PC DIY, instead of buying a ready to plug-in External Drive, you could buy an USB Enclosure and a standard 3.5" Hard Drive and put the two together yourself in about 15 minutes - give yourself loads of extra space for the same price or less

i just want an external that i can plug in and quickly transfer stuff.

now....
do i go for a new lappy on insurance or just buy one of those screens and swap it myself?

well... your laptop was a nice spec for its time ..... if you got new for old cover, you can get a VERY nice once for the price you paid.... if you haven't got new for old, it depends....
End of the day, you need to check the policy - and if you bought it with the recipt having your trading name on it ..... time to repair, probably
Least your data is intact (bet your boy is relieved!!)
