Mobile Website? Any Advice?

Post by LRPlumbing »

Hi,

I am looking for some advice as far as mobile websites go from other businesses.

First off, I am a long time reader of the Ultimate Handyman forum. I have learnt a lot over the last year or so on here! (thanks everyone for that)

The reason I joined today is because I need some advice on Mobile Websites? I couldn't find any other threads here on this.

About an hour ago I was contacted by a company selling mobile websites, and the guy on the phone was showing me some examples of how they worked etc. I can see a benefit, but am unsure whether I need it or not? So, before I jump in and spend money, I just wanted some advice from others on here that may already have one.

I am a plumbing business and posted this in the plumbers section too. (Didn't know which section would be best)

So, my question is, do any of you have a mobile website? And what are your thoughts on them?

Thanks in advance,

Lee

My first piece of advice. Stick to one thread otherwise it can cause confusion.

I have locked the other thread.

If you're half handy with a computer it's not difficult to skin up a mobile website in a few hours from your existing website design.

i would'nt bother with a mobile wenbsite unless your company is very popular also like someone else said if you just got a call out of the blue asking if you want to set up a mobile website its a scam. Scammers target alot of trade businesses. I have been contacted by about 10 different scammers in the first week of advertising my business in the Thomas Local phone book.

I have been offered a full page advertisment in a police magazine (a magazine given out to the police aparantly), a business fuel card, someone to design a logo and avertisment for my company, a advertisment in another police magazine, someone to create a website for me. Neally all of them who contacted me had a Liverpool accent. They were all scams because half way through the phone call would come the obvoius, " I need your credit/debit card details ". WATCH OUT!

I have both without a phone call and without paying anyone anything, I think you should have a website that is compatible but dont pay someone that calls you up out of the blue offering a mobile website its a crock of

Speaking from experience as a freelance web dev in my own time,

mobile websites really aren't a necessity, and a lot of users simply cant be ars*d trying to navigate through them if they're not done amazingly well.

Just get a site built by a decent local developer, it'll work fine on mobiles.

I always find half the content missing on mobile sites too....seem much like an afterthought in most cases.

On my phones/tablets - I just check the box 'view full website' and scroll.

It's not like modern browsers and mobile devices aren't just as capable of rendering a webpage.

Think I can get any modern browser ON my phone as well atm, it's really not a necessity for a mobile site :P
