Junk Mail

F******g Facebook!
Lived perfectly happily without Facebook for years, recently got in contact with an old pal who has set up a group for nurses who trained in the 70's (we were both studying there at the same time) so joined up just for that. Since then I have been inundated with junk mail, about 100 per week. Prior to this I only got one or two a week (generally from my Nigerian friend who wants to give me £5million). I use Windows Mail (via talktalk) and it is pretty good at punting all the junk into a seperate file so its easy enough to delete all at once, however I occasionally get a genuine e-mail that gets put in with the junk. I can't be bothered checking all the junk for anything that may have slipped through.
I thought of cancelling Facebook but I imagine my details will have been sold off to all and sundry now so its not likely to make any difference. Is there any way of stopping all this junk?

i joined facebook to look at a shed off all things
i had no intention doing anything else but what a nightmare one person recognized me so made them a friend suddenly everybody that knows me start asking to be my friend
i started excepting them as i knew them and didnt want to offend any one after about 2 hours continuously accepting decided to cancel
what a difficult long winded operation and requires you not to visit for 2 weeks and if you accidentaly log in within the 2 weeks it fully cancels your leaving request
i only visited 3 times once to join once to cancel the account and a third time by mistake so had to go through the whole long winded crap
there was an annoying message that said something like "glad you decided to stay welcome back your termination has been cancelled "

Change your email address.

I'm with Virgin Media and early last year they changed their email service to that of Google. (still keep the same email address though) I happened to log in via their website one day and found VM had used Google's spam filter. Looked through the so called spam and found it had blocked some very important emails, which under normal circumstances couldn't possibly be termed spam.
One of the emails it had blocked was for a bloody job interview. God only knows why it detected it as spam though.
Eventually found out how to turn off their spam filter.

Jeez if you ever find out let us know
same here had a look at Facebook got lots of spam even after leaving -
takes a while but I look at the source or header of the emails and get the senders address and add to a blocking filter or sends it to spam
this seems to work for me

I on the whole never have any issues with Gmail....apart from some flipping americans who can't spell their own email address so I get a torrent of surgeon job offers (tempted to apply sometimes sure I could wing it, though the stanley blade scalpel might be a giveaway), nursing college flyers, estate agent newsletters from tennesse, coupons for Dubai (turned out a photographer was working out there....got that one stopped anyway).
Could be somewhere else has your email or someone got hacked that or someone guessed it.
Biggest peeve at the moment is a certain Madni Muslim Girls School somewhere in deepest darkest Yorkshire, who keep texting me at odd hours looking for an Asok to tell him Fatima has not been to school, or that they want x thousand in fees. Flipping muppets!!

Thanks for all your thoughts on this one, one thing I have done is check through my address book and ensure all the people I would expect e-mails from are included (found a few omissions) so, hopefully, genuine e-mails shouldn't end up in the junk file and I can delete the junk en-masse.
Volume seems to have reduced a bit but still too much for my liking.
