Mmmmm Upgrades.......
There has been a considerable donation to the charity of the Goat, to say I'm happy is an understatement.....dribble cloths at the ready.....
Mmmm.
16GB of DDR3 (running in quad channel - 8X2GB)
Intel i7 3960X CPU
MSI X79A-GD65(8D)
and one of the oddest heatsinks I've seen in a while. A self contained heatpump type thing...most odd and a right bitch to fit!!! Asetek 510LC - keeping the CPU at a steady 33 degrees!! http://www.asetek.com/desktop/cpu-coolers/510lc.html
Just need some new SSD and a video card and I'll be happy for a while!

All I see are numbers...... (woosh - as it all goes over my head DESPITE being fairly computer literate!)
If it runs the interweb, VLC (ahem....), iPlayers, Google sketchup and a few basic games and MS Office then it's more than enough for me!

Re: Mmmmm Upgrades.......
Just had semi-clearance from the boss to order a Corsair 240GB Force 3 SSD too. Sata III with 500MB+ read/write.
Old shite is actually a quad core with 8GB ram and a RAID set, also with SSD boot drives....it's being repurposed for the time being. What sort of stuff would you take.... lol

Re: Mmmmm Upgrades.......
It was more a cost decision than anything else (it was free), but it's doing a good job - board and cpu monitoring putting the machine at 30/32 degrees!!!
Gave it some work to do last night and it hardly changed......quiet too, as the fan choice is up to you.....

Re: Mmmmm Upgrades.......
Don't have a clue - have any suggestions? I'm mainly work if I'm honest, don't really game!!
It's usually running Virtual server and clients for testing and work based things. It's got a Quad network card to go in for that and some other bits.....means I can stop using the 2U server, save my poor ears (Banshee springs to mind, higher pitched whine than the missis!).
Dual or quad outputs would be nice.

Re: Mmmmm Upgrades.......
ati eyefinity card i'd say, get as much as 6 screens off one card AND can use it for GPU processing duties (if the need arises)
though if cost is an issue, any dual output or more nvidia or ati card,
your board should have multiple x8 or x16 pci-e lanes and sli/crossfire is only used when gaming.
damn, those socket 2011 chips are normally pricey compared to the normal sandy bridge / ivy bridge chips
couldn't justify it for me gaming rig, got a 3.4ghz i7 sandybridge with 8 gig of ram and a gtx680,
did have SSD as boot drive with some files junction linked onto a hard drive, hard drive went belly up so fresh install recently.
this time trying out the intel SSD cache "Intel rapid storage" on a slow 5400 rpm 2tb drive, not quite as quick as it was but still rapid enough for frequent things (once cached in the SSD).
what is it you do as a day job BG ?

Re: Mmmmm Upgrades.......
got the old 1366 i7 in my PC, old faithful 920 D0 :)
Just get a GTX 560 Ti for the PC, BG. Simple enough card, runs any modern game on high settings, 2 DVI-D outputs, works well :)
running a 460 OC in my PC at home.. think March payday & my birthday (1 day apart) it's time for a new GPU & a new airsoft pistol :D
other half is gonna be getting sandy bridge before me... b*tch :(

Re: Mmmmm Upgrades.......
Board has 3 PCI 3.0 X16 slots and 3 x PCI Express 2.0 slots.....
Had a call last night, looks like the charity might be sorting out a couple of SLI cards too....such a generous bunch!! House of the Goat has some good patrons.
board is here.....
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X79A-GD65--8D-.html Love the military spec bit.....
Didn't realise it's got some WINKI thing in it too.....boots into linux for browsing and shite.
My day job involves is kindof a support/training/development type role, in the computer world. I work with and alongside folk who are very generous

Re: Mmmmm Upgrades.......
fair play BG, have to pony up for my upgrades
i only upgrade every 4-5 years or so, maybe every 2 years put a new GFX card in.
my last rig was a Q6600 and a gtx 8800 (then upgraded to a GTX 275)
so have to save up inbetween (or put it on credit card )
plus i've not got kids and never had a "power tool" need/fetish till recently,
i just borrowed my dad's
hope your PSU is up to running two GFX cards, then again if it never games or does GPU work then it wont have to power them up to full pelt
i'd agree with DTW, gtx 560ti will do a treat, even with moderate gaming.

Re: Mmmmm Upgrades.......
My last machine was a Q6600, it's been re-located into a thermaltake DH101....
It'll get used for a few odds and sods. Again, was mainly work stuff....had a boot SSD and ended up with 2 fast drives in a RAID1 config for safety. It's served me well over the years. Graphics were never anything special again, gaming just isn't my thing (I'm total crap at it, is what I'm trying to say..... ).
My other computers are laptops. Got a work i7 which comes around with me, soon to be replaced with a new one in a months time and a tablet for pleasure. The cloud storage makes it all easy to work with......I can't imagine having to go back to copying things back and forwards - nightmare!!!
I do buy stuff when I need too, but most of mine comes from friends....but it's never free. Everything has a time implication - as long as you know what it means, it's all good.
The powertool things is a bonus....I just pitch that to the missis that I NEED them, or I can't POSSIBLY do the work she wants.....
