Mushrooms

We've all worked there - the company that keeps you in the dark and feeds you B$ - but in the spirit of local village support me and Mrs k_e attended a village hall 'talk' on mushrooms.

This talk was done by the Michelin-trained (i.e. ex tire fitter) chef from a local hotel - nah.... he is the 'real thing' and famed throughout Scotland (apparently).

We learned about the types, where to find them, how to cook with them and lots of edible examples - a pretty good effort for the three quid it costs us

Armed with the 'knowledge' and a recently purchased book on mushrooms we proceeded to scout our ground for suitable niceties and, within 10 metres of our hen house, found the trunk of a tree I felled two years ago for firewood (an old oak tree, as yet, not fully 'dismantled').

Fungi can be very difficult to identify from books, there are not too many in this country which can do you really serious harm but the ones that do can have extremely unpleasant effects.

Be careful, if in any doubt, don't eat it.

It's always best to let the wife try them first.

That's a 'golden rule' of ours.... the book we have is VERY good at illustrating and identifying the species, right down to 'taste' and edibility but we still won't take risks.
