large pan

Post by russellsmiler »

Hello to all, I am a newbie here, and hope i am at the right place?
I have been trying without success to purchase, a giant cooking pan, (recently was on holiday and at a market there was a stall cooking a curry in a pan that was massive)
Picture below!
I would like to have one made, any ideas of metal used, thickness, how made??

Tesco have a large (60cm) paella pan, I haven't found any really large Woks (in the UK) with just a quick look on-line (32cm the largest I saw for sale).

http://www.tesco.com/direct/huge-paella ... s_311-0703

There's some large Woks for sale in the USA. Up to 30" - 760mm

Unless you need something a specific size it will be a whole lot cheaper to buy ready-made.
One day it will all be firewood.

I would think that that pan was made up out of sheet metal welded together as a one off project and would not be available to buy off the shelf so to speak. An ordinary sized pan is normally stamped out on an hydraulic press. It would weigh a lot and you would need handling equipment to move it anywhere. Then you would have to meet 'elf and safety if you wanted to do a similar style street event here. Some silly sod would trip and fall in it to get the compo.

Drop into your local Asian Supermarket and check out their wares. I've seen some 'massive' pots, pans and woks but nothing quite on the scale your photo shows. Check around for an old (metal) satellite dish - some older systems (C-band) had dishes up to 6ft across.

How big do you want.......?!

Thats probably made from 2 parts, maybe 3.
A large disc, then the sides made from 2 parts i'd guess. Looks like a seam on the far left of the picture.

Materials, lots of pots are stainless, with an aally base, but i think a lot of Woks are just plain steel. That one looks like it maybe steel.

To be honest, the main limiting factor, is the sheer size and ease of moving it about....and i suppose getting a decent even heat under a large area.

Look local to where they're from, ie chinese websites, or catering supplies. Biggest I could find in a quick look was 78cm http://www.gasburner1972.com/products/i ... r-wok.html

I used to live in Spain, and 1.2m paella pans are considered large, but fairly ordinary in a professional kitchen.
Huge would be about 3-4m across.

3mm mild steel is 23.55kg/sq metre.

A flat bottomed pan with a lip should be relatively easy to manufacture. Aluminium might be a better option. You might even find a panel beater who could 'knock one out' (giggidy) for you.

Can see that this will weigh in at 37.2 KG, HSE say thats definetly a 2 person lift, would be good and sturdy out of 3mm

Hitch I am based in Mid-wales, are you potentially a manufacturer, if so good.

A final design would be to have the sides sloping out at about 70 degrees, handles, and have thought about some eylets for suspending by chain of a tripod, possibly would like a ball hammered finish.

Enjoying this!!

It's cause UHM doesn't like you!

JK, it's just to stop spambots & companies like myself just messaging people saying " BUY OUR STUFF "

Saw a cooking program on the beeb the other night where somebody went to a traditional muslim wedding, they had a huge pot and had been cooking a huge meat curry for around 8 hours, looked like the guy was about to keel over and die from the strain of stirring it. Looked like it tasted awesome though.

Good luck with this pan if you do ever get one!

Cheers :thumbleft:

Another way about it would be to have a 'dished end' these are readily available, and don't cost the earth.
Perhaps a bit more heavy duty than you want, and more of a wok shape. They normally have a hole in the middle too, so would need welding up, and then the whole thing blasted/polished.

http://www.hvacwarehouse.co.uk/ellipsoi ... ished-ends

Either that, or contact a metal spinning firm, and ask for a price to do one.

If you wanted a square one, thats much easier
