I have to regrout my shower and remove the old silicon where the shower try and tiles meet. I have been reading reviews about silicon removal stuff on the internet and unibond and B&Q own dont get good reviews. is there any thing better? Its the last traces of the silicon I want to remove as I have removed most with a stanley knife

I use cellulose thinners (acetone) But be very carefull, its highly flamable and the vapours are heavier than air so you could soon end up with a tray full of vapour, make sure theres plenty of through ventalation.
Acetone is soluable in water and is sold in this form as nail polish remover this will also work but will take a while longer, without as much risk but in both cases you wont need much anyway, just enough to dampen a clean rag. acertone breaks down silicon, just keep rubbing. Oh! It can take all the natural oil off your hands so I wear rubber gloves when I am doing this.

Sorry to hijack your thread glassescase, but rovert - will cellulose/acetone also work for getting the transparent residue of silicone off glazing - or would it damage the glass in any way? Has always annoyed me on new d/g window units...

won't affect the glass at all, but it will damage paintwork especialy if its newly painted

Try car acc shops. The diy sheds have it under the name of hammerite thiners/brush cleaner, small tins at stupid prices.

i use this when removing silicon brilliant stuff

i ended up with hammerite thiners/brush cleaner. i'll have to have another go as first attempt did not seem to do very much
