removing tiles for re tiling.

Post by rossbarclay »

As above really. I am looking at re tiling the shower in the en suite after Xmas. The tiles are on a plastered plasterboard wall. I popped off one of the corner tiles earlier and the old adhesive is obviously still stuck to the plaster. Are there any tricks or tips for removing the adhesive so the plaster underneath is in some sort of condition that I can just tile over it? How is this normally done?

Thanks
Ross

it depends what sort of adhesive has been used really, if it was tubbed adhesive you may be able to use a scraper to remove most of it then sand the rest off. If it was bagged adhesive you will probably find that if you try and take it off it will bring the plaster off with it. Another option if the adhesive is really well stuck is to skim over it with plaster.

You will probably find though that quite a bit of the plaster will come off as you remove the tiles. Thats what normally happens to me! :cussing:

I used a chisel last night to see what would happen and luckily it came off no problem. Sayign that it was only like half a square foot. hopefully the rest comes off as easily :S

Just rip the old plasterboard off...lot quicker and less mess and time messing about...

De-screw the studs and replace with 12.5mm backer boards...fiba tape all joins with flexy addy and tile away....

If solid wall..again rip it off and dot/dad then plug screw the boards....

These options are far the best do do IMO...
