A bushcrafter question

Post by Bludall »

I am a budding bushcrafter, I have all the kit and have had a go at adapting the obligatory cutlery drainer into a hobo stove.
My attempt adapted a disposable bbq grill, to form a fuel platform . In the short term, it worked but metal fatigue is setting in, so I need a new slant on it. It has to be reusable, cheap and easy to make or source. What would you do, as metal workers?

Hi Hitch,

What is that? Is it capable of being used as a burn platform, will it withstand heat over and over again? Bearing in mind I burn twigs, cat litter or charcoal?

A bit of dry wooden cat litter is good at getting the fire going and has great heat keeping potential.

The one in the vid is from a disposable bbq by the look of it, these only have to last for one use - the most commonly available substance you will find which is most able to withstand the highest temperature is stainless steel - although I don't know how it will stand up to repeated use.

I use s/s rods (usually brick ties) in my pottery kiln sometimes, it can go up to about 1400°C before it melts, although it does bend with too much weight on it at 1200°C - if I had to buy something from a ceramic supply shop to do the same job it would be ni-chrome wire or possibly kanthal wire.

Kanthal wire (or sometimes ni-chrome) is what the elements in an electric kiln (and radiant electric fires) are made from - check out any skips for an old fire and strip out the elements and see what you can do with them - they may be brittle and of no use at all - but it has to be worth a looksee.

Thanks ayjay, I had even wondered about a stainless steel tent peg assembly.
