Surface mounted worktop joining bolts
Has anyone used this type of fitting to join worktops. I dont have ready access to a router so these might be suitable as they mount on the surface of the worktop.Link removed, image attached. Mod 2.
Many thanks

Re: Surface mounted worktop joining bolts
I've not used them; they should do the job so long as you have the clearance underneath..................... but if you don't have access to a router, what sort of joint are we talking about?
One day it will all be firewood.

Re: Surface mounted worktop joining bolts
the trouble will be you cannot tighten them enough otherwise they will turn into a hinge
any swelling will cause the top to lift and allow greater water ingress

ive seen a bloke do one with a hand saw before. and it was very good. however cant beat one done with a router. especially when they go bang on perfect.

glad you have seen it done, Fin. Sometimes when I put tasks down that I can do by hand and can be done by hand, I think people must think I am making it up lol.
Easier with a router, agreed on that.

Re: Surface mounted worktop joining bolts
id imagine its not that difficult. it was years ago when i saw it done. like 16 or 17 i must have been.
brand new saw and acurate marking. i was impressed though as i didnt realise they could be cut by hand
since i have the stuff to do em. router and the big boy trend jig i might aswell make use of them. that and ive not tried to do one myself by hand haha

Re: Surface mounted worktop joining bolts
I shall be using a solid wood worktop with butt joints so I should be able to get away without a router.
Yes I was a bit worried that they might do that.big-all wrote:the trouble will be you cannot tighten them enough otherwise they will turn into a hinge

Re: Surface mounted worktop joining bolts
you might be able use them to pull it together and maybe 2 or 3 2x1" [21x43mm]planed batons screwed underneath about 150-300mm each side off the join to hold flat

Ok that sounds like a good idea.big-all wrote:you might be able use them to pull it together and maybe 2 or 3 2x1" [21x43mm]planed batons screwed underneath about 150-300mm each side off the join to hold flat
I realise that a router would be the best method but thank your for supporting me with alternative ideas.

Might be a straight joint... but not sure about those fixings anyway.speed wrote:if you are doing mitred joints you will need a router anyway
You can certainly fit inset joiners by hand, just need a drill, spade bit and a chisel.

Re: Surface mounted worktop joining bolts
I had not thought about that. It would be possible but a bit slow maybe. I could also buy a router without needing to also buy a jig and route it free hand?Pooneil wrote:Might be a straight joint... but not sure about those fixings anyway.speed wrote:if you are doing mitred joints you will need a router anyway

Re: Surface mounted worktop joining bolts
I wouldn't recommend routing free hand... not unless you really know what you're doing.
A wide enough spade bit for the 'head' of the clamp, a series of holes for the bolt and then a quick tidy up with a chisel. Shouldn't take too long.
