Two way switching a 13amp socket(?)

Does anyone know a way of operating a 13amp socket from two different locations?

I have networked two computers (1 upstairs and 1 downstairs) and want to be able to switch the modem/router on from either location. The modem/router gets its power from a plugtop transformer so has to be plugged into a 13amp socket.

Any ideas?

you can get remote switches that may be able to do what you require.

It consists of a component that you plug into the socket and then you plug the electrical item into the component, a bit like a plug in timeswitch, but you get a remote control with it and so you have remote controll of the socket, you can use them on loads of different electricalitems.

Might be worth looking into!

That's a good idea; I hadn't thought of that.
I've got a couple of those plug-in adaptors and will just need to get another remote control handset.

Many thanks.

These are the units I've got...

...and I think I can control them from anywhere in the house. In any case, if the remote control is out-of-range of its transceiver module, they can always be controlled directly from the computer, and that might even be the best way of doing it.

If you are seriously thinking of getting one or more of these units and you don't have any already, I would recommend the "X10 Smarthome 7-piece kit"...

Although this seems quite expensive, you will find that you use all of its contents sooner or later, and it's a good way to get started with home automation. Incidentally, the remote control can also be programmed to operate other devices such as TV, DVD, etc.
