Windows 7 updates failing

Just installed Win7 on my lappy ad it works greats but has downloaded a heap of updates (100+) which it continally tries to install at startup (or closedown) but inevitably FAILS during the process - then does a rollback - and tries again and again every time I reboot.
How can I either stop these updates (which I'd prefer were installed) or find out which one is 'failing' so I can skip it and complete the process?

d'oh!
Turn it on and hold ctrl or press F8 to get startup menu when you turn it on. Go into safe mode and run system restore. Restore to previous day.
Usually gets stuck in this kindof loop when you have busy body AV software running - blocking system changes (thinking everything is nasty). Whatcha got running?
fix problem, update again

Did you do a completely clean install, removed partitions etc?

Install was clean and the only anti-virus is the built-in windows defender - I haven't got around to installing a stand-alone version yet. Given this lack of AV how does this affect my F8-at-bootup method???

hmmmm... after
four days of having the laptop say "don't power off, downloading 1 of 109 updates" and, after switching it back on the following day, "please wait, installing 1 of 109 updates"
it's FINALLY got through it
This took up 90 minutes each and every time it downloaded/installed (or tried to)
No idea why it's decided to actuall get through them all and no indication of why it failed each and every day BUT it seems to have sorted itself out. Not that I notice any difference in use.......
Fcuking Micro$oft
Thanks for the tips anyway

hi you have to install say 10-20 updates at a time when you have that many, try to update as soon as it tells you make sure you have install auto switched on!
it cant
cope with that many all at once!

Can sympathise, since installing W7 on my new PC and regularly updating the KB2532531 fails; went down the quest for error codes support etc etc and found this update is for Blue Tooth which my computer does not have! I have now downloaded KB2532531 to my desktop and tried to run it, but get the message "the update is not applicable to your computer". Yes I know that but how to stop it trying each time it updates and that I can get the all clear and up to date message?

To stop it trying this update all you need to do is
1) go to Windows Update
2) view available update
3) right click on the update and select hide update
Once you have done that, windows shouldn't try and download/install it for you.

Just bunged a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate on the new beasty with the same problems!
It was a new install on a new system and it found 143 updates which it installed ok but after rebooting it tried to configure them then eventually came up as failed - reversing changes.
Just before I was going to beg for answers on here I found the Microsoft Fixit progrm. Ran that and they installed right away!
Just thought it might help another muppet like me sometime

One question though?
Is it generally worth installing the optional updates or just the important ones

Do them all.
Don't do the language packs though, you don't need them and they take around 50-150MB each!!
you can tick them all and click 'hide'.
