Hi, i have just taken down a dividing wall between my kitchen and dining room to make one large kitchen diner which i intend to tile as one large full room. the dining room was carpet and the kitchen was tiles. there is a concrete base on both sides of the wall which looks pretty level. i have chiselled all the tiles off the kitchen but it has left the adhesive behind. Having read some horror stories about removing this adhesive im hoping to get out of it!!
Is it just simply as case of when i tile i use a thicker spead of adhesive on the smooth concreted base side and then a lesser spread over the old adhesive side to make the floor level.

Heavy duty floor scraper may do it.......I have only used them for carpet tiles and so not sure.

You can use an sds drill with roto stop with a tile removing chisel in it and that will get the adhesive up. My normal method.

if the adhesive is stuck solid I would just put self levelling compound over the top and then you have a nice smooth surface to tile. If you are a novice tiler you will struggle enough to get the tiles down flat and with the correct coverage to the underside of the tile without trying to take out imperfections in the surface while tiling. After slc has gone off take a long straight edge and slide it round the floor to check for high and low points, high points you can probably take care of with a grinder, low spots can be filled in with a flexible rapid set tile adhesive and use the straight edge and drag it over the adhesive with a sawing motion. once this has set you can start tiling. make sure you back butter the tiles and spread the adhesive onto the floor with a 12mm notched trowel. if there are any areas where there is a bottle neck (doorways between the two rooms etc.) then an expansion joint will need to be used in these areas. I would also use an uncoupling membrane myself but that is just because I'm over cautious and like to sleep soundly!

what 'filler' do you use in an expansion joint?
