uPVC window handle won't close window properly, how can I fi

Post by Epimenides »

The handle on one of my uPVC windows won't turn to keep the window shut. The window doesn't form a seal against the frame so it is getting cold in here! I've noticed that there's a small metal pin sticking out of the handle fitting. On another (working) window in the house, this metal pin is flush with the handle fitting. Here are some links to pics for comparison:

Good window:

What is this metal pin? Is it kind of safety catch? If so, how do I release it?

If the pin isn't the problem, how can I get this window to close properly? There are no screws to undo the handle. The locking mechanism seems to be via two sliding bolts on the bottom edge of the window.

Failing getting the window working, how can I seal the gap between the window and the frame to stop the heat getting out?

Thanks for reading.

Wide sticky tape. I only wish I was joking, but it does stop the cold winds.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Thanks. I can't get the pin to move at all. Looks a though I'm going to have to seal the window up with cardboard and tape.

Get a man in....

Seriously though, I don't think the pin is making any difference here, yes it probably should and would have been flush, so try and get it back in, but I doubt that is why it won't close.

Does the handle go to the closed position or even move when the window is open?

If not you have a problem and may well need to replace or repair the moving parts. If it moves when open, then make sure nothing is in the tracks on the frame to obstruct the bolts etc when you try to close it ....

Thanks for the reply.

No movement at all from the handle, even when the window is open. Tried tapping the pin back in but nothing doing.

There's a good deal of rust all over the moving parts - I suspect it's time for them to be replaced.

never seen handles like that before. but i should imagine the part that attaches to the window will be a cover hiding the screws. you will likely have better luck if you can get it off and have a look then.

I've just solved a similar problem with some of my uPVC windows in that they
were not closing flush with the frame....
Checking the multiple pivot hinges showed there was no real issue with them,so
I sprayed WD40 all over the hinges after cleaning as much dust and dirt as I could.
That had a dramatic effect, all the windows now settle onto the frame seals properly.
