i go horizontal.

The reason I asked about which adehsive you were using is because I did get supplied a tubbed adhesive once that I had never used before. Therefore I read the instructions on it and one stipulation was that the adhesive must be notched horizontal to aid in setting.

I don't think it really matters. I usually go diagonally to avoid the grout line landing bang on a rib of adhesive and having to scrape the whole lot out from between the tiles. Someone did once tell me it should be done vertically so that if any water got behind it would drain down instead of across the wall. However, he was a total t*at, not in a tiling sense but in an everyday sense, so even if he was right I still don't do it.

You see it up down sideways and at various degrees on a lot of walls that are a right bugger to get the tiles off of.

I am sure that tubbed adhesive is the only time I have seen it stipulated on instructions.

I normally notch horizontal so I can slide tile 5mm up then back down, this joins all the ribs together and gets 100% coverage of the tile (or very close to) you could notch it vertically and float the tile side to side, but I always go horizontal as I feel that if I place a tile on the wall and it has to be unsupported by tiles underneath there is less chance that it will slide down the wall. Another factor when it comes to water ingress and notching is that once the tile is on the wall there should not be any notches left for water to run along or down and if their was the water is either going to damage the wall behind if notched horizontal or the floor if notched vertical

So in summary I don't think it matters one way or the other.
