I got roped in to give a talk to the local Rotary and I am not sure how to get my Powerpoint presentation to talk to the projector. I spoke to the old boy who has the kit and apparently there is an HDMI connection and probably a USB as well. He has no idea how the kit works FFS.

Now assuming I get one or the other lead to link the laptop and the projector how do I call up the Powerpoint presentation to display please?

plug the hdmi or vga into the laptop, then on laptop's keyboard, there's normally a display switch key on the numbers row,
looks like a square shape and should be blue in colour.

hold FN and press this, your screen might go blank on the laptop, keep pressing, pausing for the laptop + projector to catch up between presses, till you get a display on both the projector and laptop.

it should cycle through local display, remote display, cloned display (get this one for simplicity), dual displays

once you've got it cloned, anything you do on the laptop appears on the projector.

then in powerpoint, i think it's F11 for full screen, or it's on the one of the menus.

Thanks for that. I remember now, you can get the display link through Control Panel/Windows Mobility too.
My laptop has a ( 1 cm length) trapezoid port which I think might be the VGA but the old boy says the projector VGA plug has two screws on it so I think that is the older type?

As a back up, if I copy just the pictures to a USB stick presumably the projector will be able to read these? I do not think that the projector could read an Powerpoint show as it needs the software, is this right?

What's the model of computer you are using - can have a quick look for you.

If it's Windows 7 you are running, it's usually very simple. Connect the PJ to the computer when it's all on, hold the Windows key down and press P - it will cycle though the output modes.

For presentations, EXTENDED mode is best. It means you can put the powerpoint on the main screen and see your notes/desktop on your laptop.

Be surprised if the PJ didn't have VGA on it.....most, if not all data projectors have VGA.

Doubt the PJ would read power point files - can he send you the PJ model? Can also check on that and give you best advice.

to add this this.....if you want to give it all a run through, you'll more than likely have a plasma or LCD screen in the house?

They will have VGA and HDMI connection - plug your laptop in for a run through, make you a little bit more prepared. PJ will function the same way.

Good idea Billy, I will plug the HDMI in the telly and give it a shot. I will come back after I have tried that.

Yep, that worked fine with the HDMI. The computer adjusted itself automatically to display and I simply called up the Powerpoint and it worked fine. As a back up I loaded just the pictures on a USB stick and plugged that in the telly and that worked as well so I know I can get one or the other to work.

The Powerpoint is essentially just the pictures but it is a bit better as a presentation.

Mind you the are old old duffers so most will be asleep after the lunch when I am to do my spiel

Don't worry about a projector recognising power point due to software I think you are confusing the issue, a projector is not a computer there for does not need software for office etc. It is nearly a video output device what ever you feed it (in this case the laptops output) will be displayed irrelevant of what software was used to create it. Just like a tv. Hope this helps

He wasn't Mark....he was thinking of plugging a USB stick into the PJ sans computer - would need the PJ model to confirm if this is possible. Some do, some don't - depends on the model.

DWD, check the ports the PJ has in advance.....HDMI is possible, but not 'the norm'. You'd be more likely to get DVI, you can get a HDMI to DVI dongle for a few quid, which is a worthwhile bit of kit.

Just phoned the bloke with the PJ but he is not in at present. Trouble is when I talk to him I cannot get away I will try later and find out. If I get out today then I might try and buy a dongle as you suggest.

your trapeziod port probably is VGA,
laptops don't always have the screw poles next to ports, i know the ones i've been getting lately don't.

VGA is 15 pin, 3 rows of 5 pins, staggered in the middle, normally female on pc's / devices, male on the cable.

Well, I think I am covered as I bought a VGA to VGA from Poundland and, even though it has screws as you say, it fits the trapezoid port I mentioned. Add to this a USB to USB and the HDMI leads I have plus the memory stick with just the pics loaded I should be okay. That is if the PJ bulb does not blow

I might add a picture of some big boobs to wake 'em up half way through

Do me one favour.

DON'T read what is on the screen, nothing worse than a bad PP presentation where the person just stands there and reads it, we can read faster, use it for prompts only, and if it is long put in a slide that says Tea Break, or one at the end that says that's all folks.

No SE, I do not do shite like that, I just use pictures and Power point helps control the flow. I am doing a talk on local history and architecture so I am free to talk freehand with no notes and use the pictures to keep it interesting. I have done it a few times and it has gone down well. No one is forced to be there, unlike those awful training sessions that most people have had to attend at some point. I hate anything like that, it is invariably boring rubbish. At least my talk is lively and interesting and I go at a rate of knots.

I've come close to death by powerpoint a few times, then again....the people I have to watch can hardly be described as lively or interesting.
