UK map software with altitude.

I have a genuine copy of Route66 Europe 2000, which shows the altitude at the cursor. It is getting old now, but does anyone know of a similar product. When looking for a building plot I need to know the terrain as well, don't want a steep hill to cycle up between me and the nearest town! :cb

Google maps / earth have a terrain layer you can turn on, and there are free sites that show altitude as well.

I also have an electric bike, bought by Lady M as a surprise for me, but it is so heavy that I wonder if the puny 235watt motor is enough to make much difference. I am thinking about using a 500watt unit on an aluminium frame.(Illegal but practical)

Have you not used it yet? It'll surprise you how much easy those hills seem! The wifes mum has one that's around 230 and she steams up the hills......she's not exactly a picture of health!!!

I thought the idea of a bike was to keep fit :boxing:

Keeping fit is one thing, I was thinking more of going shopping and not arriving covered in sweat. I'm giving the e-bike a charge and trying it out again. Hoping the Ni-Cd battery pack is still reasonable.

Found a plot at the right price, BUT hilly route 150 metres difference in 5 miles and NO buses. A town with only 15 metres in 6 miles,
buses and railway, but is there a vacant plot? I hope so.

Good for you! Spammers are the bane of any admin.

The terrain software has informed me that the building plot I saw on Pl0tsearch is totally unsuitable for a non-driver, too many hills and no sensible bus service. The approved design for the house is utter cr@p in too many ways, could be described as UK Generic, of which there are far too many already, and has already lapsed after 5 years.

How long you been looking for 'the' plot MC?

We tried about 7 years ago and quickly found that if we wanted anywhere remotely good, it was going to come at a stupendous price. We were seeing what was essentially peoples back gardens in REALLY scummy areas for around 110k which just wasn't going to happen.

What sort of budget have you got?

In the end, we took the opportunity to buy a run down bungalow on a plot, done it up, chucked a big chunk into the mortgage and have it let out for 3/4 years. Once that's up, we'll level it and build what we want in a NICE place.

GOOD land is like rocking horse sh*t.....

Too true, I've see a piece of side garden not 11metres wide, on sale since 2003, at the top of the market, at £95K, no room for a caravan or materials, or deliveries without blocking the road! At 66 I won't get a mortgage, have only DLA and state pension, and I have only £100K to spend.
