I've been discussing a bathroom project in the tiling forum under the same subject heading. Hopefully this this link will take you there to get a bit of background info.

Mudster has given me some great advice on preparing the walls for tiling, but the big debate is whether to dryline or plaster the walls.

I'm really tempted to have a go at plastering as it seems like the preferred choice. So I have a few questions first.....

1. Is it best to use a cement based plaster in bathrooms, rather than gypsum. If so, what's it called?

2. If I can use cement plaster, do you have to skim as well if the room is to be tiled?

3. Two walls are back to breeze blocks, another is stud/plasterboard and another is part stud with bare plaserboard (where doorway formed), part skimmed in gypsum and part covered in bonding. There's also a large area covered in old tile adhesive which is stuck fast. The question is 'can I put a coat of plaster straight over all these surfaces'?

4. Alternatively, would the experts out there recommend to just dryline and tile straight onto the plasterboards?

5. If I dryline, do I need to use a moisture resistant plasterboard?

I appreciate that its hard for you to tell without seeing the room but your expert opinions would be a great help to stop me cocking this room up at the start!

1) cement based is called limelite, you don't need to use it as gypsum is just as good

2) yes you need to skim either way!!

3) yes, polybond first then bonding if needed to even out the walls then skim

4 and 5) speak to mudster but you would be better using aquapanel rather than plasterboard.
