If I had my time again

Not really being grumpy, I could not find a chit chat section :)
I wish I had trained as a carpenter.
Usually my limits are diy at home, very basic stuff. Some painting and paper hanging.
Or helping friends paint their horse's stables. Hence the roller part of my name.
The last few days have seen me actually making some fitted storage units for the adore mentioned stables.
I have surprised myself how much I am enjoying it. Considering there is nothing vertical or horizontal and the floor is so uneven.
(This thread is turning grumpy now).
Despite all this I have actually made something straight and square with a few almost right angles :)
Obviously you can see it was done by an amateur. A retired carpenter had a look and said. 'As long as you learn from your mistakes'.
Which I am taking as a compliment :)
I just wish I had chosen this profession years ago.
Rich

That's interesting to read.

I think exactly the same. I got into woodwork a few years back when I had a garage and built up quite a collection of tools (band saws, planes, routers, pillar drills etc)

I used to spend hours in there making bits and pieces and loved it. I'll revisit it as a hobby some time in the future I'm sure. I've even considered doing a cabinet making course in my spare time. I'm an electrician by trade and have kind of fallen out of love with it over the last few years with all the regs and restrictions. I wonder how different it would have been if i'd chosen a different path years ago.

I find jobs are enjoyable when there's no paperwork, customers, deadlines, etc, etc.

There is probably a carpenter sitting somewhere thinking that he is sick of wood and wouldn't mind being a spark :-D

Thats a tad unfair sailor John :angryfire:

Not having a brain applies to most modern trades from what I've seen and I'm quite certain lateral thinking has been banned completely.

Do you ever look at a piece of fine antique furniture, made maybe in the 18th century? Made by hand, using classic hand tools, no power, just mind-blowing craftsmanship. I look and wonder.
How many cabinet makers can do that today?

I was hoping BigAl would be on.

Did a small job today, had to remove some chipboard covers in a loft, they used cross heads and slotted on the same panel all different length, 18mm chipboard held down with 65mm & 70mm screws, slots were beggared an 50%. One or two matched up with the screws holding the battens in place, just went down the side ::b :cussing:

Had fun though, it ws for my son-in-laws Parents, Dad has a Physics Degree, but everything he touches either blows up or falls to pieces  He switched on a light in the garage and the bulb blew lamp fell to bits taking out the MCB, as he said ' I'm a disaster when it comes to DIY'

My older brother has a degree in Nuclear Physics, and not much common sense between his ears. One time he had wasps build a nest above the porch of the bungalow he lived in. He went up the loft armed with a small torch.  Managed to crawl along towards where the porch was,, heard a buzzing sound,, just before panicking and falling through the ceiling.     ( I wish I'd been there to see it, I'd have absolutely wet myself)

We had a wasp nest in the loft of the snooker club, I climbed up and beat it to bits, then got the hell out of there. The club was full of them for a while

Sitting on the garden bench with a cuppa enjoying the last but of Sun.
Chilling after wrestling with a lift up counter too on the storage unit.
Slow going today as fitting hinges is not something I do often.
They work though.
My brother was an electrician, gave it up through too much crawling under floorboards and in lofts.
I think it is true not having to work to a deadline makes a big difference to the enjoyment from a job.
Plus I have done my best ever planing today.
In the spirit of grumpiness, It is now starting to rain. Time for a bath
Laird, I was thinking about this only yesterday. Pugin I think it is carved pieces of wood separately then assembled into finished sculpture. I know my limits, so had a little play today layering pieces of plywood.
I have an idea for a future project.

........apart from the Sparky bit..........yes, pretty much: the job is not what it was - we're nothing but a lump of meat with a bag of tools.
