Which would be best to get for an amateur diyer who is planning on doing some decking in the future, a drill driver or an impact driver?

I'm not entirely sure what the differences are between the two to be honest.

for decking impact every time although 10.8 may struggle with bigger fixings into decking

Not 100% sure as yet as I'm struggling to decide whether to go softwood or composite - softwood much cheaper but composite no maintenance really and non slip etc etc...

Anyway, would probably be going with run of the mill decking screws I should think...

What exactly is the difference between Impact and drill drivers?

Wow, that is quite a difference and I guess that makes the impact driver the best choice when it comes to needing to drive screws into hard materials.

May I also ask how a drill driver differs from a normal screw driver then? What is the point of them if the impact drivers are so much more powerful?

Drill driver will normally have a bit more Ooooomph than a screwdriver, It will also have a fixed setting for drilling as well as several torque settings for screwing..

For building a deck I would deffo go for a drill driver, preferably a twin pack (either drill/driver x 2 or a drill/driver and impact driver)
as you will prolly need pilot holes drilling for the screws to prevent splitting.
