LED lamps/bulbs ?

Having had a look through old threads I wondered if there have been any advances in the light quality and reliability of LED GU10 replacements - if so, anyone got any recommendations ?

I am also open to any suggestions for new light fittings to replace the ceiling mounted 3-spots we have all over the place if it makes for better and longer lasting LED light !

We replaced 150 gu10s with Philips LEDs at work in January some of the lights are on 15 hours a day not had one fail yet and the light output in very good

I've replaced ALL of my bulbs with LED, mainly due to the energy monitor thingy I've received as a gift from British Gas a year or so ago. The little devil used to raise sharply when the kitchen lights (6 standard halogen spotlights) went on. I started with replacing them with GU10 LED and was amazed at the results displayed. Got literally obsessed with the LED and went around the house replacing all the other bulbs with LED. Not all simpultaneously, mind you, but managed to LED convert the whole house in about 3 or so months - every time I saw a special offer or found special price on line. now the only one left unLED-ed is the ceiling light in sitting room and only because so far I haven't found reasonable replacement for its odd G9 bulbs.
But I would say with each bulb replaced I haven't noticed the difference in the light quality, and have noticed the difference in energy consumption.

all my bulbs are leds and my total consumption is between 8 and £16 for the whole year
with all the lights that are normally on its around 28w if i leave the hall bathroom on its another 6-12w

the problem is not as much as in finding the bulbs, but finding the right size :-( the G9 particular seems to be significantly larger in LED versions than in halogen :-( the halogens are 12mm in diametre and the smallest LEd I could find was 20mm. unfortunately, the ceiling light's shades aren't that big, so have to choose wisely. they also have to be dimmable, as there are 6 of them. As far as I can understand, for dimmable LED you have to replce your dimmer with LED compartible one. so, while all is do-able, so far the costs are not convincing. might have to wait for the prices to go down, eventually they will, as the popularity of LEd raises. it has to! ;-)

Thanks for the further replies - been spending too much on other things as we have only just moved into our new house but will get some soon - the new house already has some cheapo LED's that are not the best advert as light is blue-white (daylight I assume but looks horrible) and some that change colour but put out so little light that it is like being in a nightclub with a powercut !

It depends on light brightness and cost as to which LED's are used to make a lamp. SMT LEDS are now cheap to make but Normal LEDS are even cheaper, but not as bright, although as with most things the price is always coming down.

these are my comparesons 4 x the wattage on a low energy bulb and 9 times the wattage on led bulbs

you will get all sorts off wild claims but until you get someone to verify the actual equivalent you wont go far wrong with my guide

"energy saving lamps" are really compact fluorescent tubes. Doesn't matter where they come from. They are totally different so can not be compared as such.

Look at it this way.

CFL comes on slowly and gets brighter.

LED comes on full brightness as soon as you turn on the switch

LED's come in warm white or cool white, CFL's don't

Its a case of each to their own. We have mostly LED's but do have a CFL on the landing, and a couple in the loft.

I have just got back from shopping at ASDA,where I bought a 6w LED bulb for £3.75.I think they are normally £7.50,but they had them on offer.
