getting fibre broadband in a couple of weeks & presently have 1 pair of network mains adaptors for the youview box.
can you have more than 1 pair of these adaptors running on the one ring main? just thinking about Jr playing minecraft, at moment he uses wi-fi but complains about the speed. the new fibre router will help but if spending a few quid on another set of adaptors will save me some grief then it's money well spent

Yes, can use many. Buy a set and you only need to use one - other is a spare (one to router, one to whatever and one to the new thing).

While there is a 'standard' where they shold all work together ( if you get the same type - home plug av, etc) but it doesn't always work that way. Get the same ones for peace of sanity.

If you have proper signal (2 bars of 3 or 3bars of 4-5) that means the connection fine ( the signal strength is above 40%)
in this case the problem is not with the network or the boradband the problem is the computer too old, infected, too many things runing on it.
a few testing tool:
google -> speedtest . net check your connection speed. if the download above 1,5Mbit and the bing is belov 60-80 its fine. upload atleast 0.5k
windows run -> cmd -> enter in the black filed 'ping 192.168.1.1' (or what printed on the bottom of the broadband) and you 'll see the response times in ms. under 80 its fine. no problem with your local network.

Not entirely true.

It's possible to have a strong, but poor quality signal. There might be lots of wireless networks or something that is interfering with the quality of the signal, these might be causing problems with the connection.

Wireless is great, but it doesn't mean it's the answer to everything.

Cat5 an option VI? if you can route it, its best by a clear mile.

You can get black too, which looks just like a phone/TV cable.

+1 for BG's suggestion. Hard wired into the router is by far the better option. I have a wifi dongle on my computer (because if my BB goes down, I can hack one of the neighbours wifi networks and use that till mines back up and running again. If I connect to my wifi via the dongle, the speed drops quite a bit. (from 30Mb/s to around 6Mb/s) even though the routers fairly close to my computer.

Best to just bite the bullet and crack on with it. Save yourself the 20 quid for therapeutic drinks afterwards that would have gone on powerline kit.

They are alright, but cable is king.

I use a mixture of powerline, cat5e and wireless. My whole house is cabled, but it's another job I never 100% finished. Up in the loft, I've not terminated everything in the patch panel....I get bored so easily A lot of them had crimped ends too, as I used them to send video from room to room instead of networking

Nothing beats the boringness of a cable and it's constant reliability.

Could do while you are at it, unless he's going to need more. I'd maybe just do one and lob a switch in.

If it's just xbox and PC, then run two.... if he needs more, then chuck the switch in.
