Tiles set into wooden worktop - adhesive type?

Post by Azarel »

Hello all,

I'm going to be building a wooden cabinet to go next to the gas cooker to store the gas cannister in. I'd like to inset some tiles into the hardwood top to have a place onto which I can move hot pans off the cooker. The tiles will be 8mm thick 10x10 heat/chemical resistant tiles.

I've already gathered from reading around that epoxy resin grout is probably the best bet but what about adhesive? Any special kind of tile adhesive I should look out for? The tiles will be framed in so there's no chance of them moving laterally or falling off anything, but I wouldn't want them getting wobbly a few months down the line.

Thanks,
Mike

Your best bet is to first use plywood, cover in eml, then float flat with cement. Then stick tiles to this.

That's how they do most worktops across the pond.

Thanks for the reply Crooksey. Any reason why I couldn't use a hardwood base instead of plywood with the same technique? Plywood is three times the price here and I'd have to have it transported from about 20 miles away, which would cost more than the sheet of ply in the first place.

Ply will do. Make sure you seal the underside and edges. Prime the surface before tiling and use a cement based flexible adhesive.

Grout, you are spot on with. Epoxy.

Will last you for years.
