ive been at this all night and im too tired to work it out for myself

just replaced a strip light with two light fittings

light fitting 2 is spurred off light fitting 1

light fitting 1 has the switch

light fitting 2 is always on?

light fitting 1 works off the switch?

im sure its something simple but please advise before i kill the wife

when you connected light fitting no.2 to no.1 you connected it wrong.

you have connected the no.2 live to the "looped-in" live feed in fitting no.1

take it out and connect it to the "switched" live of fitting no.1

As above but you could also get rid of the wife as she probably distracted your attention while you were deep in concentration.
