My other desktop would not connect to the internet. Looked at Ethernet cable, clip had busted. no problem, i have another cable somewhere here, swapped cables, still nothing. Swapped sockets on hub, still nothing. Got another cable, all working.

My question is.

Is one of the cables (see pic) a cat 6 cable?

Both cables have been sitting around doing nothing, not used.

For the sharp eyed, you will notice the clip broke off the 2nd cable too. (So binned that one as well)

Check the colour coding of the wires in the plug - you'll probably find one is wired as a cross-over and the other as straight-through.

The second cable you tried could have been an ethernet crossover cable (used for connecting one computer to another, or a computer directly to another network peripheral like a printer, without going through a hub or router).

Most of the clips are snapped off mine, I'm heavy handed I think.

If it's Cat6, it will usually say on the cable, inked along the cable. Usually a lot stiffer due to the insides of the cables too.

Unless you have a really old computer, then you should be able to use cross over or straight though - doesn't make a jot of difference, the network card will detect and adjust accordingly (auto MDIX).

If it worked, now it doesn't, I'd say one of the cables have a break inside. It's light cable (24 awg?) and it's quite easy to crush and snap one - if you don't have a tester, then OHM it out if you REALLY care.

For the cost of a pack of cables, I don't even bother testing - throw it, grab another
