Best way to fix cabinets together?

Post by CarpenterChris »

What is the easiest way to screw 2 cabinets together so they don't move? I understand about batten to the wall and fix them that way, but whats the easiest way to screw the front of them together so they don't move?

To try and emphasis what I mean, I have drawn a very crude MS Paint diagram.

(Please note, I am available to do Architectural Drawings!  )

I always clamp the fronts together and screw through both cabinets where the hinges are that way you don't see the screws with hinges are fitted

What size screws do you use? I'm just about to do a howdens kitchen for a client and am terrified of screws going through the cabinets haha.

just be aware the cabinets must be without any gaps before you screw them together
if you "pull" them together you will distort one or both cabinets

I usually clamp the units together (so they are lined up with each other, then use a Trend Snappy (countersink/pilot hole bit) set to about an inch depth, to pilot and c/sink one side, and use a 25mm screw to fix the units together. As philprime says, I do this where the screw head will be hidden by the hinges, but on base units, I sometimes position the top screw about 1/2" for the top of the unit and an inch back (never seen as it's hidden from normal view by the top of the unit and the w/top)

A bit slow really, (and a bit old hat) 30X4mm screw behind the hinges (where possible) for me too.
One day it will all be firewood.

OK, let's have a race, ready, steady, GO.......

I've now put my screw in and you've drilled a 5mm hole.

I've finished.

I win. :huray:

Normally i'd agree but he said it's a Howdens kitchen so in fact he'd be un-distorting and squaring them back up

As the others. 30mm screw hidden by the hinge. You'll find suitable screws are provided with the units.

Nothing wrong with those. I use them.

I also use the screw method behind the hinge plate.

On the handmade kitchens I used to screw and then pellet, because you can't screw behind a butt hinge. The cabinets would also get screwed and pelleted onto the scribed plinth base.
