best wood to tile on

I need to box in some old pipes before tiling , so was wondering what is the best wood to use for boxing in pies and for tiling straight on to. Also can i tile straight onto wood. :dunno:

Ply board would be easiest/best.

Personally I don't like tiling on to ply but seeing as its a small area then you'll be fine, make sure the ply is thick enough. The ply will need priming before you can tile, not only on the face but also the reverse. Even though you'll never see the reverse, by priming it you are further sealing it and avoiding the ply warping in a damp environment.

batten the walls and plasterboard for the facings.

Follow adhesive instructions and prime if necessary before tiling.

Far Eastern (Good quality and not the 5hite) is fine for tiling onto, as is MDF and chip board.

I don't tile onto MDF or chipboard (apart from P5 flooring) but manufacturers including BAL list these surfaces as suitable for some of the adhesives they make. Plus MDF was probably the most pig of a job I have ever had when getting tiles off.
