cheap splashback materials

Hi All. Ive been putting off doing the splashback in my kitchen for a while now due to not having the cash for the glass or tiles i like which come in at minimum 50/60 a sqm. I also looked at stainless steel but that also seems like it'll be expensive.
I'm now looking for a cheaper alternative and am considering something a little bit unique after watching that new £100k house programme on TV. Tonight they suggested the use of mild steel as an alternative to stainless steel and from looking on the internet i could get all i needed for the area quite cheap - possibly more than regular tiles but considerably less than glass or stainless steel. Are there any reasons why this wouldn't be suitable? who would i need to call to fit it?
