Hi all, I need a little help and advice, were having a new bathroom, and want a separate shower room instead of over the bath.

The shower room will be formed from a small walk in wardrobe in the back bedroom which takes off the bathroom. I'll be taking out one wall in the bathroom to create the entrance and I'll be stud walling the current wardrobe door way to close off that room.

Now the questions. I was looking at one of the paint on waterproofing kits, are these any good? Can they be used on plywood?

Next, the floor is going to be tiled as the shape is awkward for a tray, I was going to use 25mm ply screwed to the joists, waterproof then tile, is this ok

Plasterboard for the stud wall, is there a specific type I should use

Are you looking at a full "wetroom" type of installation??

Sort of, the room itself will be a wet room I suppose you can call it but water won't get into the rest of the bathroom, it will have a shower curtain/door a cross the opening to it and it will have a step on the threshold so any water will be confined to the shower room if ya know what I mean

If you're not using a tray how are you planning on creating the falls to the waste? I think some photos or drawings would help.

I am guessing by you mentioning joists this is a house and not a bungalow , if not done 100% correct your going to have issues with water seeping to ceiling below causing annoying staining and decorating issues . might be advisable to get professionals to tank it and tile it .

It isn't a DIY job and is way beyond most 'bathroom fitters'.

Am I right in thinking that the main problem is to stop any leaks happening around the waste?

The waste is one problem, whether you use a shower tray waste, gulley in the floor or through the wall.

You also need the experience to know if the floor is stable enough.

You need experience of forming falls.

You need experience of making a shower 'tray' from scratch including any kerbing.

You have the tanking system and making sure it is correctly done.

Finally you need to be able to tile to follow the falls that you have put in place. Depending on the position of the waste outlet this could include envelope work. Envelope work is something that quite a lot of 'tilers' haven't got a clue how to do.

I've years of experience in flagging as a machine driver/ground worker so making falls and cutting tiles to suit shouldn't be a problem, its the same with flags but obviously on a smaller/thinner scale.

The last owners of the house tiled directly onto the floor boards, this is now a few years old and still there's no sign of cracked bonds or loose tiles, I should imagine 25mm ply and a sheet of backerboard (correct me if I'm using the wrong stuff, its just what I've read) on top of the floor boards would be sufficient.

Can the water proofing kits be used on backer board as most say not to use on timber

A wetroom is not a DIY job, especially not the way you are planning on doing it. Honestly mate flagging and tiling are not the same thing and I would always advise against a first floor wetroom never mind a DIY first floor wetroom
