apps.............why?

I was just replying to another post and it got me wondering.
I like technology, but some times I have to ask why, what or no I didn't, did I?

I am referring to "apps" (applications) and for that matter "pics" (Pictures) I know there must be umpteen thousand if not millions of apps available, but my question is, what apps have you downloaded and either never used, or some time later wondered why you downloaded that particular app?

Similar question with pictures, (no, don't post them) have you taken pictures on your mobile, then some time later wondered why you took it (Then promptly deleted it)

Since I asked, I will start.

Apps.
Over 39 that came as standard, 37 I have never opened, and one I wish I hadn't, and what "zino" is, I have no intention of finding out.

Pictures.
water coming up through a road (Heard of it, not seen it before)

-----------------------------------------------
I have seen the virtual Guinness, its amusing the first time you see it, but then what do you do with it?

I'm the same, download them and never use them.

Only one's i regularly use are whatsapp, wechat, tfl and QQ music
Last one is chinese and you can download virtually any music. They don't seem to be too bothered about licencing there

Same with photos, delete about 80% every few months, most are just dumb

I'm just about to take delivery of my first smartphone (Nexus 5), and so I have no experience of apps. My better half (who has been using an iPhone for years) has tried to give me some advice, but I'm still not sure which might be worth having.

As a Yorkshireman, I shall certainly be looking at the free ones (!) but I suppose you can't be sure whether they will turn out to be any good until you have tried them. I presume that you can delete them if they don't suit?

You can delete them indeed John. Apps are just like additions to a tool kit for me. With the exception of angry birds ::b It's manages to sneak it's way on to every android phone I've had :-)

You'll find most of the Free apps with be laced with adverts...

I tell you what though, I've got a few really good ones...I've got one called 'WeQ4U' , which gives you access to 08 numbers from your mobile at a normal rate...Some 08 numbers can charge £1.50 per minute (plus) to your mobile...I was tapped for £100 on tech calls from my mobile last month. A week later I discovered the WeQ4U app  But no more extortionate call charges :thumbleft:

Viber gives you free calls including international. provided the person you're calling also has it - and it is a free app.

I don't have many apps installed-

Tap a talk (for this forum)
Qrafter (for reading QR codes)
Scores on the doors (After BG posted it on here)
Flashlight (use your phone as a torch)
Homemonitor (for checking my IP camera)
Facebook (this is really handy to check what shite the sad people of the world are constantly posting)
Youtube

I also have one song bought from iTunes- Time to say goodbye

I have a Experia Z and some apps I can't delete. Probably need to do it as root or something

I'm the same as most in that I rarely buy apps but when you think about it they only cost the price of a poncey coffee from starbucks. I did buy some apps when i travel, such as foreign tube map etc Helped a lot actually

Thanks for app Wes. I have spend a fortune on phoning HSBC on their 0845 number and 17 levels of sub menu :cussing:

I have seen videos on youtube about some of these smartphones and the amount of personal information that the manufacturers/ phone operators can glean off them with hidden software they install. Software that cannot be deleted nor turned off. Quite frightening really.

Thanks for the useful information.

Not knowing for sure which ones come with obligatory adverts (!) I'll just have to ditch any that do, or at least those that overdo it.

The WeQ4U looks interesting. We have Vonage (VIOP) for our landline and, as I understand it, the same benefits can be extended to up to two mobiles for no extra charge. For £6 a month (equates to line rental) we get free calls to all 01, 02 and 03 numbers and reduced charges for some others, so it may be worth my while investigating that for mobiles.
