Drilling a 0.6mm hole in a bolt

Post by diggerdog36 »

I need to drill a 0.6mm hole into one of tje flats of a steel bolt. I have 9 drill bits left (yes, I already smashed one). I bought a Kennedy Pin chuck but its going back as it doesnt run centrically. So ive ordered a precision one off t'interweb. Can anyone give me any pointers? Ive got a good quality Medding pillar drill that im going to adapt the depth stop so I can use it to screw thw drill down with more control. But I need to know recommended RPM'S, lube or no lube?? The bolts have 8.8 on the heads which I think is the tensile strength, if its relevant!!

Thanks again guys.

They are nozzles for a lead dripper to make lead shot! I dont think theyre hardened. I drilled down the shank of them with a 3mm drill no problems at all.

lead wouldn't get through a o.6mm hole that's smaller than a pin hole :dunno:

ok if you say so
why not drill a say 4mm hole to within 1mm then you will have the dimple too locate the drill and finish the hole

High speed and low pressure...will the pillar drill chuck hold a 0.6mm drill?

Small drills often snap when breaking through or if abused, make sure the machine vice is bolted down (presume you're using a vice?) and use VERY light pressure as it breaks out the other side.

File a small flat and pin punch to start, use action like a wood pecker to start, constant pressure would bend the drill, clear swarf. (thought drilling 1/16" holes for split pins was difficult enough in my old trade). I would use plain water to cool the tip as oils would tend to clog swarf.

I use 0.6mm drills all the time. I've never successfully used one in a pin chuck in a larger drill though. I have a dremel in a pillar stand that works perfectly though. You can also purchase 0.6mm drill bits with larger shanks (6mm) to avoid the need for a pin vice.

You need a pretty good quality pillar drill to have little run-out that won't break a 0.6mm drill bit though....
Don't take it personally......

I use water based oil on my guns. Its called Youngs 303. There is an explanation on the back on how to make aqua oil. I think it's 1 part oil to 3 parts water.

I am using a pillar drill and vice. The drill itself won't hold a bit smaller than 1mm that's why I'm using a pin chuck. I'm not drilling all the way through the head (its not for split pin or locking wire).

Yes, realised that after I'd posted :?

Sounds like you've got all the gear so it should be fine...unless somethings still not running true???

Posted water as soluble oil tends to be milky and I should want to see the tip action clearly. Good luck you seem to know already what you are about but K_E's dremel sounds like the kit.

Ive done my fair share of drilling as I was a rigger in the RAF for 12 years but the smallest I drilled there was 1.6mm I think my main problem is my kit is to heavy duty!! Like trying to thread a needle with a ballistic missile!! I've got a Dremel but the chuck is siezed closed and the lock on the spindle broke and there's no way of stopping it spinning to unscrew it except disassembling it! I will persevere!
