Hi all

On Monday I started my next project, a unit to fit under our wall mounted tv that will house the dvd player and sat receiver as well a a number of dvds. The unit will consist of a solid oak top, birch plywood carcass and poplar face frames. I'm undecided about the doors yet, weather I'll make them from poplar and paint them or oak and lacquer them.

I've included a number of photos to give you an idea of where I'm at in the project. As you can see both face frames are completed. Doors next.

My friend Kreg A lot of people get po-faced over pocket screw construction but it gives a nice strong accurate joint and if you cannot see it who cares? I glue as well in this situation. I love working with poplar it gives a lovely finish with paint and sits in well with birch faced ply. I would paint the doors white and only have the top in oak as it looks more balanced.

I totally agree with you, if you can't see it what does it matter - It's fast, accurate and provides a strong joint. Thanks for your feedback re doors, again I think you're right with the balance - I'll paint the doors an off white colour.

I get po faced about it!

have you considered the need to operate with the doors shut as in clear panel for remote control or a door that folds away or lifts off

other consideration is ventilation and wires
place a 10mm baton on the back off the shelves
have the back off the cabinet 50mm away from the wall with full depth top

have the back mostly open for ventilation and allow easy connection between units

fix a 6 way trailing socket at the top under the top so the loose cables can loop neatly down and back up

is your tv on top or on the wall??

The DVD/Sat will be going in the centre section with no door. I have taken ventilation into account so that's no problem. In regards to the power supply, the unit will be placed in such a way that the power socket will be accessible without the need of a trailing socket.

I could have used biscuit/dowell joint but thought as it wouldn't be seen I would just use pocket holes Lazy way out of doing the face frame as well

I've decided to go scrap using the birch as my timber provider has let me down with the delivery. He said that he's been waiting over a week now for bales to come in from the UK. I've been waiting 3 days for it to be delivered, so instead I'm using left over marine plywood (an expensive alternative) but it's not going to be used. At least it'll be an exterior grade tv unit

are you planning on a part open back if not what have you planned for the cables and leads??
remember scart leads need around 70mm from the back off a machines for clearance

The dvd player and sat are both HDMI so no scarts, I'll take a photo when I have a chance to show how I'll do it
