This is my first posting here. I look forward to contributing as well as seeking help and guidance here. I am retired and a keen DIY enthusiast.
I have just purchased a 115mm Black and decker angle grinder. It is not new but has hardly been used and came boxed with the user manual and two unused resin grinding discs . I hope initially to use the angle grinder,very gingerly, when I do some patio paving soon.
I did some reading on line re what disc do what etc including watching your very own good video.Most helpful.
My question is, while I accept you get what you pay for, I saw some discs advertised at very low prices. I am particularly drawn to the Silverline (#394779) 115mm Diamond cutting disc @ £3.67 each. It is supported with many good user reviews.
I would appreciate your comments. Additionally I may, a bit later on, do some tiling for walls and floor.From my on line reading it appears a non segmented disc would be preferable to the segmented disc I referred to earlier for paving.
I have seen these advertised for £3.41 each (#868730) also supported by many good reviews.

My advice would be....

Avoid Silverline like the plague...

You do indeed get what you pay for, so I'm another naysayer when it comes to Silverline! To date the diamond discs I've bought myself have been either Spectrum or Makita, so far only for mortar raking, although the brickies on one job last year were issued with Bosch discs which they didn't complain about. Quick search on eBay turned up these at £6.99 which should be reasonable as well as affordable. If you want to frighten yourself with the prices on pro discs, then take a look here. In the past the main problems I've had with cheap discs were that they were poorly balanced; this results in a lot of extra noise and vibration, neither of which I welcome! My own "work" angle grinder is a Metabo W8-115, so I'm using the same size as yourself, albeit mainly for metal cutting in rip-outs (before we start putting-in the joinery)

I've always struggled to get all the way through full thickness paving slabs with a 4 1/2" grinder - so out comes the trusty but scary 9" beast.

Mind you, all my paving is 50mm thick 900mm x 600mm concrete monoliths. For thinner stuff the 4 1/2" will be fine.

I am clear now, from your replies, on the brand of disc I will probably settle for. It looks lke Bosch are a good value for money bet.
I do, however, have one more query.
It s my understanding, rightly or wrongly, that segmented diamond discs cause a lot of dust, noise and not as clean a cut as a non segmented dicsc.
Would it, therefore, be better rather to start with a non segmented disc or is there no real significance between them?

They will both create plenty of dust.

Segmented blades will produce a clean enough cut for paving - to some extent it's down to how you use it.

Some non-segmented blades have to be used wet - so be careful which you buy, (or how you use it).

Lots and lots of dust!!!!

Goggles, mask and ear defenders definitely required.
