Lycos web Hosting

I have used Lycos web hosting for a few domain names in the past and have often recommended them to other people. Now I regret it :cb

Most of you will be aware that www.ultimatehandyman.org is offline and has been for 4 days so far, this is because the Lycos control panel will not accept the new ip addresses of the new server for the site. Now it looks like it could be another three days before the issue is resolved.

I sent them a ticket over this and even telephoned them about it and they said that it was my new web hosts fault, I contacted the web hosts and they said it was Lycos's fault. I then telephoned Lycos (0870 number- only available 8am-5pm monday to friday) and they said it was my webhosts :angryfire:

My new web hosts recommended that I move the domain name out of Lycos and so I started the procedure online a couple of days back. I just telephoned Lycos support and they were very unhelpful, saying that you cannot use the Lycos control panel to point a domain to a dedicated server- despite the fact that it has been pointing to a different dedicated server for the last couple of months. I then asked them for an authorisation code and they said that they could not do this over the phone and that I had to use the online form, which will be answered in the next 72 hours.

I cannot believe that a well known company like Lycos can run a business like this. Their support is only available during office hours and then you have to wait three days for a response or call their rip off 0870 number.

I guess the moral of the story is do not use Lycos.

It is very, very annoying and there is nothing that I can do about it ::b

Hopefully it will get sorted soon, if not I will have to contact my solicitor and get them to sort it and some compensation!

try finding the number with www.saynoto0870.com

I have put all the non 0870, 0845, 0800 numbers in my mobile, as they charge you between 10p and 25p pm for these numbers........now it just comes off my inclusive minutes

not sure if this is on-topic or not here, but anyway.....

I have always tried to keep the domain registration and the web hosting companies seperate. This makes it very easy to go into your account at the registrar and chang the DNS info to just point to another server if you are changing web hosts.
It also means you are not subject to excessive re-registration fees if the web hosting company think they have got you by the balls as they 'hold' the domain name as well.

That is exactly what I have always done.

My domain names are with Lycos ( I have about 15-20 with them, but not for much longer) and my hosting was with 1and1, the problem started when I moved the 1and1 server to an infrenion server. Lycos would not let me change the dns settings to their server. Eventually after a few days I had to move the domain name to another registrar and so Lycos decided to drag their feet and it took me 4 days to get an authorisation code from them. Now it is in the hands of my new registrars, who are probably now also being held up by Lycos and so it may be 5 more days yet, then when I change the dns settings it could be a couple more days ::b
