Is this a pin or a rivet
Hi all,
The 'thing' which holds my ratcheted garden cutters together has failed and I'd like to repair.
Does anyone know what the 'thing' is shown in my picture next to the cutters?

Looks to be a little rivet....
Chances are it'll cost more in time and effort finding a replacement than replacing the shears....

Re: Is this a pin or a rivet
What kind of rivet would it be? I thought pop at first but aren't they used to fix two items together. This pin would be loose once repaired.wine~o wrote:Looks to be a little rivet....

Perhaps, but it's the principle of the thing. Surely mending stuff is what being a "handyman" is all about?Chances are it'll cost more in time and effort finding a replacement than replacing the shears....
Quite probably. If that rivet thing is hollow you could file the head off and use the remaining tube to protect the thread of your screw, and give the mechanism something of the correct size to work with. A little nylock nut and a couple of washers and off you go! If you are feeling really adventurous, there is always a cut down nail and a small ball pein hammer.Would a nut and bolt suffice?
When all you have is a hammer, every problem is a nail.

Re: Is this a pin or a rivet
Unfortunately not. There is no room for a nut once the handles are closed and the mechanism retreats within the handle.wrinx wrote:Would a nut and bolt suffice?

Re: Is this a pin or a rivet
You might get away with a 'roll pin' or a pop rivet by knocking the steel mandrel out and then roll the plain end of the tube after it is inserted into the cutter tool using a centre punch or similar, if you do not have a flaring tool But all a bit hit and miss & trial and error.

Re: Is this a pin or a rivet
I'd either put it back in and beat the end over until it holds (hammer and suitable sized punch) or just buy a new pair of secateurs.
Is the ratchet particularly effective?
I use a reasonable quality pair of anvil secateurs and they work fine, if I need more leverage for cutting thicker stuff a good pruning saw is effective (with backward facing teeth they cut on the pull stroke) - or a pair of loppers.

One day it will all be firewood.
