Best way to cut through 1" Steel Rod..?

Post by pizzamandan67 »

Hi everyone, first time UHM post so please go easy :dunno:

I really need a couple of cuts done through 1" Steel rods and was wondering what the best way to do it would be..?

The cuts don't have to be perfect but preferably not left in a dangerous state (they aren't going into an engine or anything like). I've desperately tried searching for engineering firms around my area which would do a couple of cuts but quite simply can't find any local ones... (I live between London and Kent).

I'd be happy to attempt cutting them myself with hand tools if it can be done without ruining hundreds of blades (quite a novice but my Dad is handy enough) but was ideally looking for a certain type of manufacturers or merchants which have something industrial set up which I could pay a couple of quid to do instead (helping the economy and all...)

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated and I can narrow down my address if somebody knows of somewhere which might be able to help me, but just wanted to see what you professionals said first..?

Thanks in advance everyone

But only if you don't have an angle grinder..

Also to get a straight (Ish) cut with a hacksaw or angle grinder you'll need a vice or something else to hold the rod whilst cutting...

For just a couple of cuts a hacksaw blade would be the best option imho, particularly for an inexperienced user (grinders can surprise at times), you'll need course blades with a 24tpi rating or less.

P.S. Need to clarify, if you're ok using a hacksaw there are more suitable coarser blades with 18tpi or less, but they can be harder to manage (more breakages) if you're not used to them.

Haha thanks everyone for your advice, man pants will be well and truly strapped on and I'll go get a decent hacksaw..! We have a solid vice so hopefully shouldn't be a problem, just wanted to check it with the pros first

If I get stuck I'll come crawling back again, although might take me a bit longer if I lose a few fingers.... I best get cutting!

Cheers again! :salute: :thumbleft:

Grinder if you have one, if not a hacksaw with a good quality blade.... eclipse, bacho, starrett....
Put a bit of oil on the blade every so often will help you along. Cutting oil ideally, but a few drops of clean engine oil will be better than nothing.

I would use an angle grinder. But then I have one and I'm lazy.
