Repairing advice needed

We have just removed the tiles from the bathroom and are not 100% sure if we need to repair the walls.

What do you plan to put up afterwards?

If the plaster board is sound just just tile over it all

Oh yeah that needs at least filling and by the time you've pissed around filling you may as well have skimmed - you need a flat, sound surface to tile on.

1. Because the tiles won't grip to unsound surfaces

2. Because the files won't be flat if the surface is bumpy and knackered

9/10 retiling means new plasterboard and a full skim for any areas where the tiles are removed. Thing to remember though is the skim needn't be perfectly smooth for tiles - it's actually better for it to have a bit of roughness to it as long as it's nice and flat and well bonded.

Unibond it a couple of times, skim over with multifinish and then when it's dry give it a coat of SBR before tiling.

Note: I notice you say large tiles - if the tiles are over 20kg per m2 you won't be able to tile on to plaster skim, if they're over 30kg per m2 you won't be able to tile on to tanked plasterboard. You'll need to line the surfaces to be tiled with hardibacker or something like that.

Ended up using a professional tiler with 15 years of experiences so hopefully he knows what he's doing.
