I have seen this a lot on ebay.

I think that sellers increase the price to a stupid amount when they have no stock left as I think it saves the seller fee's

A few months ago I saw something that would normally cost £2 being advertised at £3k

Me too, I've been told it saves a re-listing fee: makes sense to me.

I needed a new iron for a block plane about five years ago, my local tool shop wanted over £8.00 which being a tight wad I thought was a bit steep.

I went to Lymington market where an old guy sells second-hand tools (all kosher stuff, not robbed), I bought a little 5" block plane for £5.00 which I love to bits, I prefer it to the 7" one I'd used for years, I liked it so much I got another one the same off Ebay.
One day it will all be firewood.

You also see it on Amazon a lot from third party sellers. Probably for the same reason.
