dipped doors

Post by Jenny the novice »

Wasn't sure about posting this but then you guys do come up with some good advice and might think of something I haven't so best to get your advice before I start!

Just had 4 and a half doors dipped and stripped by London door stripping. We got the doors back after just two day and following instructions on the website have painted vinegar on them (still smelling).

So what do I do next? Do I have to wait a couple of weeks for them to dry out? They will then need sanding. We want the final look to be as natural as possible so how do I achieve that? I guess there shouldn't be any problems in rehanging - can we put them back up now?

Thanks in advance for all your advice.

Hi Jenny - can't answer your question, but I have two of my own if you don't mind ....

1) Is the white stuff visible in some areas remains of paint?
2) How much did it cost? (either per door, or for the four (and a half  )
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

The white stuff is paint but most of it is just flaking off so not a problem. It cost £15 per door and we had a half door for the understairs cupboard which cost £10. Delivery and collection was £30 so total we paid £100.

I though it was worth doing because the paint likely had lead in it and one small section took a whole tub of Nitromors but still left a gooey black stuff underneath.

Thanks, Jenny - I was wondering as it can be a real pain getitng ALL the paint out the grain and so my fireplace is at this very moment in a local stripping company having a similar job done as your doors
Being charged £45 for the one fireplace, so seems pretty much same rate as yours
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"

Yes they can go back on, let them dry out slowly, otherwise they will warp, finish wise, try an acrylic varnish, this will not go yellow over time.

Just give them a good sanding when dry with nothing more than 120 grit, and of course, go with the grain :thumbright:
I wish I was born rich..............instead of just good looking!!!

Also dont go triming them to fit the door opening, they will/should shink back to fit. (providing they came from the same opening).
