Portable MP3 Players

Mrs k_e used to go jogging to music (many years and good couple of stones ago....) and has a hankering to start again.

Given the upside of this ambition (1. gets her out of my hair for a while and 2. makes life more interesting if the jogging works....) I'm feeling generous and want to surprise her.

I suppose the biggest surprise would be to lose some weight myself but.... meh, it's the womans place to do that.

Either way, without resorting to a mobile-phone-type solution or the 'i' route has anyone got any experience of MP3 players that you would recommend? 16Gb would be ideal and long battery life will ensure a few hours peace and quiet.

Given most music listening is (probably) done via smart phones these days I thought some of the older members might recall 'proper' MP3 stuff (or is it actually still de-rigur?)

PS - may God forgive me (if she reads this....)

 God'll forgive no bother, your lass on the other hand...

I can't help, my ears must be abnormal because I can't keep the phones in my ear especially when moving and I can't hear it when I get them in.

I use a Phillips Go Gear mix while I'm welding at work.
Only 4b&b but a 8 (might be 10) hour battery life and easy to move music onto. I think it was only around 20 squids from argos, is small and easy to work.
Imo, can't go wrong with it.

I have an ipod nano, got it from Here
I got a pair of JVC over the ear headphones from Here

Very happy with both. Runs for hours.

Most people don't bother with MP3 players any more and use their smart-phones. If your missus is jogging outside all the more reason to take a phone in case of emergency's.

The Nokia Lumia 530 for instance can be bought for around £80 and has an expanding memory by way of micro SD card so her music storage would be limitless.

Where we live the phone signal is as good as non-existant so the 'phone' route isn't as sensible as you'd think.

So you don't use it as a phone bit still a cheaper option than a nano

Yeah but she'll get a good couple of hours out of it unless she's doing an ultra marathon which I doubt :-P

iPod's are probably the best solution saying that I have a 4 year old itouch and apple no longer support it and apps that run correctly are getting harder to get and/or update due to ios changes

Samsung use to do a media player it was the same as the galaxy ace phone, iirc it has been discontinued tho

cheapest route would be a smart phone like a Samsung ace 3 or 4 if you don't use it as a phone the battery life is good

On a side note. headphones !!! who ever invented the ear cannel type head phones wants to be put up against a wall and shot - there a instrument of torture, Sennheiser (mx range) are good value for money and are cheap from amazon (not a amazon trader)

Splash out and buy her one of these:

I bought one for my missus and put all her favourite tunes on an 8GB micro-SD card for her. Pleased as punch she was.

Although you don't want a mobile phone, it probably is the best solution.

Safety (as you mentioned if there is signal) but she can also use couch to 5k. An app that tells her when to walk or jog so builds you up to 5k slowly, the idea being if you don't over-do it, you are less likely to give up.

She can also use something like Edmondo or Strava to track the run, see how far she went, how fast and monitor progress as she goes.
